MACHINE AND HAND SEWING THREADS

Sewing threads have a count system of their own,
which is slightly different to the systems that we have looked at so far
in addition the UK, USA, and the Far East each have individual systems.

Generally speaking spun staple threads use systems loosely based on a cotton count,
while filament threads are usually based on denier or a metric count.

In the UK we use a system called the thread weight system, which involves a weight number.
The number is almost always printed on the reel label,
(50w, 40w, or more usually 50, 40 without the w).

Contrary to popular believe, the weight number is not necessarily equal to the cotton count number.
For example, 40/2 cc is the same as a 40w thread,
but 40/3 cc, (such as quilting thread) is not, this would be rather thicker and closer to a 30w thread.

Converting thread numbers into a Tex value is difficult.
First it would be necessary to know whether the number on the label is a ticket no. or weight,
a cotton count or a metric Nm., or a denier count.
Secondly if it is a weight ticket no. the number of ply's is not always indicated on the reel label.

So here is another chart that you might find helpful.

This chart states the Tex-number of specific threads.
It has been produced after much research and a great deal of help from a number of manufactures

remember the higher the Tex number the thicker the thread

I hope the information given will help you do just that
