YARN COUNT

CONVERSION and COMPARISON CHARTS
You should by now have some understanding of how yarn
thickness is calculated,
but how do you sort out all those different numbers?
When selecting a yarn from a catalogue
or from an internet store, you may well find,
that one 1ply yarn has a woollen count value,
another 1ply yarn has a Nm value and yet another yarn
has a tex value.
How do you know which is the thickest,
or which is the thinest?
How can you compare them?
The best way is to convert all the numbers into a common value.
As Tex is the easiest system to work with,
I suggest you convert each yarn value into a Tex number.
This chart shows how to convert any count system into Tex.
| 590.50 | ÷ |
cotton count (nec) | = Tex |
| 885.80 | ÷ |
worsted count(New) |
= Tex |
| 1938.00 | ÷ |
woollen count(Ny) | = Tex |
| 1000.00 | ÷ |
metric Nm | = Tex
|
| 0.1111 |
× | denier |
=Tex |
IMPORTANT NOTE
The calculation is based on the final (resultant) yarn thickness.
In the indirect or count system remember 2/30's count, means
2 ends of size 30 yarn are twisted together to make a single yarn of 15's
To get a final count, divide the yarn size by the number of ends.
This gives the number to use in the conversion calculation (see example).
Also remember:
fixed weight/indirect/count value - the higher the number the thinner the yarn,
fixed length/direct/tex value - the higher the number the thicker the yarn.

WEIGHT
per 1000mts |
METRES in 1 kilo |
| yarn A |
1 ply, Nm 30/2 |
1000 ÷ 15 = 66 tex |
66 grams |
15,000 |
| yarn B |
1 ply, 2/24's (Ne w) |
885.80 ÷ 12 = 73 tex |

| yarn C |

Although all the above yarns are called 1 ply,
we can see that yarn B is thicker than the other two,
and yarn C is the thinest
